FLEX Global Abroad 2027–28: Funded 10-Month Exchange

FLEX Global Abroad is a funded academic-year exchange for eligible American high school students. Participants live with a host family and attend a local school for approximately ten months. The programme is an outbound opportunity for U.S. citizens, not a route for international students to study in America.

The official 2027–28 application deadline is 30 November 2026. Applicants must be enrolled in grades 9–12 and meet the age rule at programme start. This guide explains funded costs, exclusions, country placement and school-credit planning.

FLEX Global Abroad Details

The exchange combines host-family life, local schooling and cultural and leadership activities. It aims to build cross-cultural understanding while participants share information about their own communities.

Current destinations include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Morocco, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Thailand. The Department of State may amend the country list, and applicants should be open to assignment across available destinations.

Covered Costs and Personal Expenses

Funding includes round-trip airfare, in-country support, host-family room and board, visa fees and emergency accident and sickness coverage. A modest stipend reflects basic needs in the host country rather than an unlimited personal spending allowance.

The student FAQ also describes orientation and school tuition where applicable. Passport costs, required medical examinations or immunisations, and personal expenses beyond basic needs are excluded, so families still need a budget.

  • Round-trip airfare and host-family room and board.
  • Host-country visa fees and emergency coverage.
  • Orientation, in-country support and a modest monthly stipend.
  • Budget separately for passports, medical requirements and extra spending.

Eligibility for FLEX Global Abroad

Applicants must be U.S. citizens aged 15–18.5 when the programme starts. They must be enrolled in grades 9–12 at application, including eligible home-school students.

Permanent residence alone does not qualify. The published policy also restricts specified State Department or programme-contractor employees and family members, and it limits repeat participation in funded youth exchanges.

  • Confirm U.S. citizenship and the programme-start age requirement.
  • Check grade enrolment and programme-specific rules.
  • Review employment-related and prior-participation exclusions.

School Credit and Application Preparation

Discuss graduation, attendance and credit transfer with your home school early. The programme does not decide whether your American school will recognise the overseas year, and all participants are expected to attend their host school.

The combined FLEX Global Abroad and NSLI-Y application allows applying to one or both programmes. Complete every section of the application form accurately, as the required information is listed in the application itself.

  • Confirm the home school’s credit-transfer and graduation position.
  • Prepare accurate school, citizenship and personal information for the application form.
  • Plan for a passport valid at least six months beyond the programme end.
  • Consider readiness for host-family life and a different school language.

How to Apply

Use the official American Councils application linked from the programme page. Complete all sections accurately and verify that your chosen programme is the U.S. outbound route.

Trained evaluators review complete eligible applications and selected semifinalists are interviewed over winter. Finalist, alternate and unsuccessful outcomes begin to be announced on a rolling basis in spring; selection is competitive.

  • 1. Read the official eligibility policy and student FAQ.
  • 2. Open the combined application and select the relevant programme.
  • 3. Complete the required sections and submit before 30 November.
  • 4. Monitor email for interviews, decisions and country-assignment instructions.

Application Deadline and Other Youth Routes

The published deadline is 30 November 2026. The programme page gives no closing time or timezone, so submit well before 30 November.

For a shorter high school option, review Yale Young Global Scholars, a two-week summer programme for high school students. It has its own tuition, aid and deadline conditions and is not a substitute for this school-year exchange.

Frequently Asked Questions

Country assignment and school credit are as important as the funding package. A funded place still requires flexibility and preparation from the student and family.

The answers below distinguish U.S. citizenship rules, covered expenses and educational obligations. Read the detailed official policy before applying.

Can a non-U.S. citizen apply?

No. The official student FAQ requires U.S. citizenship, including for applicants who hold U.S. permanent residence.

Can I choose a guaranteed host country?

No. Staff assign countries using the application and selection input. Preferences do not guarantee a particular destination.

Does the programme pay for a passport?

No. Passport costs, required medical examinations and immunisations are excluded.

Will my home school automatically award credit?

No. Credit transfer and graduation arrangements are decided by the home U.S. school.

Is this mainly a language course?

It is a cultural exchange with initial language support. The official FAQ distinguishes it from the more language-focused NSLI-Y programme.

Conclusion

FLEX Global Abroad offers eligible U.S. students a funded year of school and host-family experience overseas. Its value comes from immersion and cultural exchange rather than a guaranteed country choice. Families should understand excluded expenses and school-credit implications before applying.

Submit the complete official application before 30 November. Plan passport and school discussions early. Remain flexible about placement and follow the selection team’s instructions if shortlisted.
